Embroidering words to learn French.
We had the pleasure of developing an embroidery workshop for the Musée de la Marine for women learning French. After a visit to the newly reopened museum, which highlights the culinary arts at sea, we worked on French expressions containing culinary terms: “the cherry on the cake,” “telling salads” (telling tall tales), “having bottle” (having experience)… What do these expressions mean? Are there similar expressions in the cultures of the women present at the workshop? After these intercultural exchanges, each participant traced a pattern and a word on the same theme onto a napkin. They then embroidered them to better internalize the language and exchange with others on related topics. A few anchor-shaped biscuits completed this convivial moment. In the end, there were as many napkins as participants, work on the language without even realizing it, and above all, a moment of collective sharing. When the thread helps to loosen the tongue…
